Nagasaki (長崎) was Japan’s sole 'window' to the West during its 300-year period of isolation and it combines both oriental and western cultures. There are several places worth visiting:

  • Mount Inasa, offering perfect views of the city and its surroundings (can be reached by a cable car),
  • Glover Garden - containing western style buildings and gardens and statue of Tamaki Miura who served as an inspiration for the 'Madam Butterfly' opera by Giacomo Pucchini (whose statue is also close by),
  • Twenty-six Christian Martyrs' monument in memory of 6 foreign and 20 Japanese Christians who were crucified in 1597, as a result the decree prohibiting Christianity, and, of course
  • Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park - which are as impressive (and as haunting) as the ones in Hiroshima...
