To reduce acid rain, all coal fired power stations have a desulphurisation system with the production of gypsum as a consequence. The activity of this gypsum is: Ra-226 0.007Bq/g; Th-232 0.001Bq/g; K-40 0.008Bq/g. Natural gypsum: Ra-226 in range 0.004 - 0.030 Bq/g

Gypsum products used in The Netherlands can be subdivided into 3 categories:
(a) Materials of low specific activity (~0.005 Bq/g of both Ra-226 & Ra-228);
(b)Materials with intermediate levels (0.10-0.15 Bq/g of both Ra-226 & Ra-228); and
(c)Materials with high levels (0.20-0.25 Bq/g of both Ra-226 & Ra-228).
